Wow, March flew by! We've been working hard learning money, reading about Amelia Earhart, lions, and leprechauns. In science, we've been diving in deeper with the properties of matter. We learned how solids (candy) can become liquids with heat. We also explored which materials were insulators and conductors. We had our fun PBIS assembly where we won cool prizes and played "Are You Smarter Than Your Teacher?" (Of course they are!) Have a super fun , relaxing spring break!
We've had a fun couple of days in second grade! On Thursday, we enjoyed listening to a storyteller perform The Lorax and a couple of folktales. Susan from the Lake County Farm Bureau came by to teach is about Green Eggs and Ham. We learned about chickens, eggs, pigs, and goats. Today we began learning about the properties of matter. The kids designed and made hats to protect themselves from the hot sun while learning about the properties of the materials we used. Here are a few pics from the past couple of days.
We had a super fun Valentine's Day party! Thank you to the parents who planned fun games, treats, and snacks. We played fun games in the pod, stacked candy hearts, unwrapped kisses with gloves (minute to win it) decorated cookies, made a craft, and gobbled up a healthy treat.
We had so much fun putting on our Hooray for tthe USA show last week! The kids worked so hard learning the songs, working on the posters, and learning about famous Americans in history.
We had a fun last week before break! My middle son, Sam who's home from college, helped out with a few projects. We read and wrote about polar bears, made gifts for you, built shelves for elves, and enjoyed a last day before break with hot chocolate centers and some holiday movies and popcorn in the afternoon. I want to thank you for all your support the first half of this year. I hope you all enjoy the time with your families and friends the next couple of weeks.
We had fun designing and building tables large enough to hold a Thanksgiving feast. We definitely learned how important team work is in pulling together our designs.
We did fun, hands-on activities on Halloween day. We had a great time exploring pumpkins. The kids predicted whether a pumpkin would sink or float, weighed, measured, and counted seeds. We wondered whether it was true that pumpkins with more ridges have more seeds (that seemed to check out with our pumpkins!) Thank you to the Duitsman family for donating the pumpkins for our activity!
We had a super fun party day in second grade! We designed and engineered pumpkin towers in the morning. In the afternoon it was PARTY TIME! Thank you to Mrs. Silverberg, Mr. and Mrs. Renn, and Mrs. Hart for arranging an amazing party and the parents who came to help. You can definitely see how much fun the kiddos are having!
The second graders took a fun field trip to the apple orchard today. We sat in a big teepee and learned about the history of the farm, played on the playground, visited the petting zoo, took a hayride to the orchard to pick apples, and wrapped up our visit with apple cider donuts and cider. The weather was perfect, too!
